The Secret Zoo by Bryan Chick is a book for children nine, and up. Plenty of adventure and action, there are intelligent animals that are a part of a secret society. The suspense of whether they will be able to find Megan. Keeps you riveted to the book. Also, vivid imagery has an impact on how you view this book. It keeps your attention solely on the book. Throughout the book you don’t know who is a friend, or foe. There is a man in the shadows who is set up as a possible enemy. Mysterious for he is always in the shadows watching, and you’re not sure what his motivations are.

Megan first becomes suspicious of the zoo when she notices Monkeys are scaling the walls in her neighborhood. She starts to spend a lot of time at the zoo watching different exhibits making notes of what she sees. One day Megan suddenly disappears. Three weeks after Megan disappears a bird taps at Noah’s window. With a message telling him to go in see Tall Tail, a langur at the zoo. Tall Tail gives him a page of Megan’s notes of what she noticed at the zoo. He follows the clues; into he realizes that he can’t do this on his own. He shows the other action scouts Richie, and Ella the notes. And they follow her notes to other exhibits trying to find more clues. It leads to them meeting a possible foe Charlie Red, and a possible friend Tank. Tank sets up a way for Noah to sneak into the zoo at night. Ella and Richie make their own way inside trying to help Noah. On their way to saving Megan, they meet animals who are trying to help them. Blizzard the polar bear, and Podgy the penguin is two of the animals they meet. They also meet a person who is trying to prevent them from finding Megan. Like Charlie Red who calls the police-monkeys to stop them.

Megan is a girl trying to find out a mystery. She records what she sees in a diary her mother gave her. Trying to make sense of everything she sees. She wants to figure this out on her own. And her friend’s would never believe her. Noah is a guy that wants to find his sister. Knows when to continue by himself, and when it is time to ask his friends for help. Also, he is very brave for he is willing to sneak into the zoo at night. And not knowing if by going he is stepping into a trap. Richie is a smart guy, and a wiz at gadgets. He likes flashy items, such as shoes. He scares easily, but is willing to endanger himself to help his friends. Ella is a rude girl, with a sharp tongue. She is the one who wakes Richie to follow Noah into the zoo. Might be rude, but she also has a very caring heart. And she is always willing to help her friends out. They make up the action scouts. Even have a fort from which they can look into the zoo.

I love this book, and I couldn’t put this book down. Can’t wait to read the next one, it has everything I want in a book. Mystery, suspense, intelligent animals, and a secret society, I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. Just the name of the book caught my attention. And the idea of a secret zoo made me want to read it. I also love the friendship that the action scouts have. They’re willing to risk their own lives to save Megan. I can see anyone of any age reading this book. After all, children books aren’t just for children.
